On a 10 kick and FREEBIES!!

Hi there you guys!

I have not been posting as much because I am really focusing on my action research with the Governor’s Teacher Network. Just in case you didn't know, my focus is on best practices in order to meet the very high expectation of mCLASS Reading 3D. I tell you what!? I am learning quite a lot! I will be sharing all my findings with you here in my little blog.
My sweet boys are keeping me very busy as well. Our soccer schedule is getting very intense, and I drive little sweet boys around the city on a daily basis…there is nothing else I rather do though! My boys love their soccer and I love the fact that they are passionate about “something” at an early age.

Moving on!
As a grade level we are  working hard on establishing a strong concept of the number ten.  This year, more than ever we are focusing on subitizing, ten frames and Rekenrek bracelets.  One of the things that we did as a grade level was to throw a  10th day of school bash!! We had a great time full of math fun!
We began by reading this book about two friends who go on a butterfly hunt, but it really is an addition adventure!!

We practiced some counting and cardinality by doing this sticker activity. Just in case you are wondering, the stickers came from the $1 section of Target.

I asked my Honey Graham to help me create a poem about how to make a tens frame.  I am so glad he is so talented with words, it would have taken me until the apocalypse to come up with something like this! True story people!

It is very important that my kiddos learn how to make a ten frame early in the school year because this is  one of the ways in which  my students will explain problem solving strategies. By doing this activity, with the poem, I could address problems like these:

We also took the time to draw things that come in tens like toes and dimes:

And we also made our names out of 10 base blocks! I am really sorry I don’t have a picture of the final project!!

I hope you can use these activities and your kiddos enjoy them as much as mine did!
Have a great week friends!!!
